The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will appoint a new contractor to repair a poorly constructed ramp at Kenyalang Park Market after the previous contractor was terminated for failing to meet required standards.
The decision followed a routine inspection yesterday led by Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, accompanied by councillors Cr Judy Kho, Cr Chai Ju Loon, Cr Eric Tay, Cr Roy Mason and the market’s supervising officer.
“MBKS prioritises safe and accessible public infrastructure, and contractors must adhere to the specifications and standards required,” Wee said in a statement.
“The previous contractor failed to meet the required standard. We are now following proper procedures to appoint a new contractor, and rectification works will commence immediately to restore the ramp to a safe and acceptable condition.”
The council issued an apology to residents and market-goers affected by the issue.
“We apologise to the public for the inconvenience caused. The council will rectify the issue as soon as possible,” he added.
During the inspection, the team also assessed fire extinguishers at market stalls to ensure they are properly maintained and easily accessible.
Wee highlighted the importance of fire preparedness in high-traffic areas such as markets.
“Fire safety is crucial in public spaces. We want hawkers to be well-prepared and confident in handling fire extinguishers and understanding basic emergency procedures,” he said.
To enhance safety awareness, MBKS will organise fire safety education sessions for hawkers in collaboration with Bomba. The sessions will cover the proper use of fire extinguishers, the safe handling of gas cylinders and electrical equipment, and what are the early response actions during emergencies
Rectification works on the ramp are expected to begin immediately once the new contractor is appointed.
