Two-Year-Old Boy Dies After Box Jellyfish Sting in Langkawi

Date:

A two-year-old Russian boy who became the centre of a desperate four-day medical battle after being stung by a box jellyfish in Langkawi has died, marking one of Malaysia’s rare but most devastating encounters with the deadly marine creature.

Vladimir Iakubanets was confirmed dead at 9.46am today at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, where doctors said complications from the sting proved impossible to overcome.

His father, Nikita, 32, still reeling from grief, described his son as “a strong boy” who fought with everything he had. He stressed that the family did not wish to blame anyone but hoped their tragedy would spark greater public awareness about the dangers of box jellyfish in local waters.

Recounting the incident, Nikita said Vladimir had been playing in shallow water at Pantai Cenang when he suddenly screamed in pain. Within minutes, the toddler stopped breathing. Tourists rushed to help attempt CPR, but when they reached the beach’s first responders, the boy’s wound was only washed with vinegar before the family was sent to a clinic and then to the hospital.

Nikita expressed gratitude to the medical teams in both Langkawi and Alor Star, saying they fought tirelessly to save his son. He added that the family would not pursue legal action, believing instead that Vladimir’s death should stand as a warning for others.

“We believe his life had a purpose — to save others,” he said, calling his son kind, bright and the heart of their family.

Vladimir’s mother, Olga, described their son as their “little angel,” recalling how he said “I love you” to them every single day. The family had only arrived in Malaysia on Nov 14 for what was meant to be a holiday.

They plan to cremate Vladimir and bring his ashes home to Russia.

The tragedy follows a previous fatal sting in 2018, when a five-year-old French boy died after encountering a jellyfish at Pulau Pangkor. While rare in Malaysia, box jellyfish incidents remain a well-documented risk in local waters.
