Date:

The Magistrates’ Court in Kuching has set January 7, 2026, for the further mention of a case involving a 32-year-old man charged with the murder of a three-year-old toddler at a house in Kampung Rampangi on October 7.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali granted the adjournment for pre-trial case management after deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng informed the court that the post-mortem report had not yet been completed.

Pending the new court date, the accused will remain remanded at Puncak Borneo Prison without bail.

The man was charged on October 16 under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries a mandatory death penalty or imprisonment of up to 40 years and not fewer than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction. No plea has been recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to the charge, the accused allegedly murdered the child at a house on Jalan Sultan Tengah around 7:45pm on October 7. Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu stated on October 9 that initial investigations suggest the toddler was likely abused to death.

The accused, who is the victim’s mother’s boyfriend, was arrested at a house in Padawan around 11am on October 9. Police noted he has six prior drug-related criminal records and tested positive for drugs at the time of arrest.

On the same day he was charged with murder, the accused pleaded guilty to two charges under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for abusing amphetamine and methamphetamine. Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan fined him RM2,500, with a default of eight months’ imprisonment, and placed him under police supervision for three years. Additionally, Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment and two years of police supervision.
