AKMU Shocks Fans With Departure From YG After 12 Years

Date:

AKMU siblings Lee Chan-hyuk and Lee Soo-hyun are officially parting ways with YG Entertainment after 12 years, marking the end of a long and successful partnership. Both sides emphasized that the decision was made amicably, with full support from YG’s founder and chief producer, Yang Hyun-suk.

On the 21st, YG Entertainment revealed that Yang visited the duo’s home about six months ago for a private dinner, where they reflected on their journey together since first meeting on K-pop Star Season 2 in 2012. During the gathering, AKMU opened up about their dilemma: whether to stay with YG, the agency that guided them through years of growth and achievements, or to take on new challenges independently.

According to YG, Yang encouraged the siblings to follow their instincts and explore music in a new environment, expressing his full support for their next chapter. Understanding their artistic tendencies and concerns better than anyone, he reassured them that pursuing fresh experiences outside the company would be meaningful for their careers.

After months of careful deliberation, AKMU chose to step away from YG and begin a new journey.

YG expressed deep gratitude, saying, “It has been a joy to watch them grow from passionate young musicians into beloved artists. We thank AKMU for the unforgettable music and emotion they shared with the public.”

The duo, in return, delivered handwritten letters and expressed that they would remain “YG family forever,” promising to help whenever needed.

“Just as AKMU’s sincerity hasn’t changed, YG will always consider them family,” the agency added. “We wholeheartedly support their new challenge and will assist whenever necessary. We ask fans to continue showing warm support as they start this new chapter.”

Debuting in 2014 with hits like “200%” and “Give Love,” AKMU has become one of Korea’s most trusted and acclaimed musical acts, known for their unique sound and emotional storytelling. Their departure marks a significant moment in K-pop, closing a major chapter while opening a new one for the celebrated sibling duo.
