Engineer Loses RM247,000 in Online Investment Scam

Date:

An engineer in his 20s from Sibu lost RM247,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the victim lodged a report on Thursday, claiming he had been deceived after responding to a Facebook advertisement under the name ‘Moomoo Malaysia’.

After clicking the advertisement link, the victim was contacted via WhatsApp and added to a group called ‘New Dream Voyage 5’. The group members allegedly explained stock investment strategies and instructed him to download an application called ‘WHG Roup’, reportedly linked to Windsor Heritage Capital and Nexi Speak Global.

Between Oct 20 and Nov 9, the victim made 15 transactions amounting to RM247,000 into a local bank account. He initially received RM28,000 in returns, which encouraged him to continue investing.

However, when the scammers demanded an additional RM250,000, he became suspicious and reported the matter to the police.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Zulkipli urged the public to remain vigilant when presented with offers promising high returns and to verify the legitimacy of companies and websites through official platforms such as Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission Malaysia.

He also advised members of the public to use the Investment Checker tool and to verify suspicious bank accounts or phone numbers through proper channels.
