The Sarawak government is in the process of gazetting abandoned, active, and inactive logging roads as state roads to allow for systematic maintenance under the State Road Maintenance Programme.
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, stated that a total of 5,977.038km of logging roads across the state have been identified for takeover.
“Once these roads are officially gazetted as state roads, the Sarawak government will assume responsibility for their maintenance under the State Road Maintenance Programme,” Aidel said during a question-and-answer session at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN).
He added that the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak and the Sarawak Forest Department have pinpointed active logging roads that provide vital connections to rural settlements across the state.
In Kapit Division alone, 3,781.694km of roads have been registered under the programme, including 2,353.28km of state roads, 1,417.82km of village roads, and 10.594km of agricultural roads.
Aidel made the remarks in response to Nicholas Kudi Jantai (GPS-Baleh), who raised concerns about logging roads with active licences but no ongoing operations, which had previously prevented JKR from obtaining approval for maintenance work.
