Tropical Storm Senyar Leaves Trail of Destruction, One Dead and 49 Fallen Tree Incidents

Date:

Tropical Storm Senyar, which swept through several states since midnight, caused 49 incidents of fallen trees and claimed one life in an early morning accident along Jalan Selandar–Machap. According to Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad, the fatality involved a motorcyclist who collided with a tree that had fallen as a result of strong winds from the storm. The death, he noted, was indirectly linked to the storm.

Authorities also reported a structural collapse at the Petron Diesel Jetty in Port Dickson involving eight workers, though no fatalities were confirmed from that incident.

Negeri Sembilan has been identified as the worst affected, recording 33 fallen tree cases, one slope failure, one structural collapse, and two flooding incidents. Melaka reported eight cases of fallen trees, followed by Selangor with five, Putrajaya with two, and Perak with one. Despite being in the storm’s path, Kuala Lumpur recorded no incidents.

Speaking at a press conference after the department’s Integrity Day Celebration in Ayer Keroh, Nor Hisham said that while Senyar has since weakened to storm status, the Fire and Rescue Department remains on high alert due to potential landslides and additional tree collapses caused by saturated soil following continuous rainfall.

He also urged non-governmental organisations assisting flood victims to coordinate closely with the Disaster Operations Control Centre to ensure safety. “We appreciate the efforts of NGOs and volunteers, but they must inform the centre and wear safety vests. Good intentions should not create additional risks,” he said. The public has also been advised to avoid visiting high-risk and recreational areas during this period.
