100 Bus Drivers Strike, Causeway Commute Thrown Into Chaos

Date:

Thousands of Malaysian workers commuting to Singapore were left stranded early this morning after around 100 cross-border bus drivers staged a strike at 5am, triggering massive delays at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and nearby bus stops.

With buses halted, many workers were forced to walk across the Causeway to avoid being late for work. The sudden strike, believed to be linked to a wage dispute, went viral on social media as videos of people walking across the Causeway circulated widely.

One driver, Atoi, 35, claimed a new salary scheme rolled out two months ago slashed their pay from RM2,800 to under RM2,000, while also increasing their daily trips from four to five and introducing unclear deductions. Johor executive councillor Fazli Salleh is expected to meet with both the drivers and the bus company to find a solution. Some drivers later returned home, while a few resumed their routes around 10.30am.

The bus company has yet to release an official statement on the incident.
