One Dead, Seven Injured in Factory Van Crash in George Town

A factory worker was killed and seven others were seriously injured when the van they were travelling in skidded and crashed along Jalan Mount Erskine in George Town early this morning.

The accident, which occurred at around 6am, saw the factory van lose control and veer off the road, trapping four of the eight occupants inside.

Assistant director for Firefighting and Rescue Operations at the Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), John Sagun Francis, said an emergency call was received at 5.59am. Teams from the Bagan Jermal and Lebuh Pantai fire stations were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters found eight individuals in the van. Four were trapped and rescue operations were conducted using specialised equipment. All victims were successfully extracted by 7.17am and handed over to Health Ministry personnel and police.

Seven victims, all women aged between 21 and 52, sustained serious injuries. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, though their identity has yet to be confirmed.

The rescue operation ended at 7.50am, and the case has been referred to the police for further investigation.
