4 Found Dead in Kaohsiung River in Just 5 Days

Date:

A chilling discovery was made early this morning when a city sanitation worker spotted the body of a man floating beneath a culvert along Hedong Road near Love River. Authorities were alerted at around 5 a.m., and the body—believed to be a man in his 70s—was recovered by emergency responders. He was pronounced dead at the scene, with no visible injuries. The man’s identity remains unknown, and police will conduct fingerprint analysis and a forensic examination to determine the cause of death.

This marks the fourth case of a body found in Kaohsiung’s waters within just five days, raising public alarm.

The string of incidents began on July 19 at 12:50 a.m., when an 86-year-old man was found dead on the rocks near the Kaohsiung Port Xiziwan scenic platform. He was later identified by his family. Later that same morning, a second body—a woman in her 60s wearing a purple jacket, jeans, and black shoes—was discovered floating in the water. Authorities believe she had drowned less than 24 hours earlier. Her identity is still unknown.

Then, on July 20, yet another female body was recovered from Love River.

Now, with this morning’s case of a deceased elderly man, Kaohsiung has reported at least four drownings in less than a week, prompting calls for greater safety measures and public awareness near the city’s waterways. Investigations are ongoing.
