A Johor Bahru man is living in fear after his home in Taman Universiti was petrol-bombed by a group of Singaporean loan sharks, according to reports from NST and The Star.
Hoo Chong Kang said the attack occurred at around 4.18am last Saturday (Dec 6) when he noticed the smell of burning outside his house and heard a loud noise. On investigating, he found burn marks on the floor and shattered glass, believed to be remnants of a Molotov cocktail.
CCTV footage later showed two men on a motorcycle stopping in front of the house and throwing the incendiary device. A notice demanding immediate repayment of money in his son’s name was also posted on the gate.
The incident stems from a loan dispute involving Hoo’s son, who works at Changi Airport. He had applied for a S$30,000 loan from a group posing as a licensed financial company but never received the funds. When he attempted to cancel the transaction, the loan sharks demanded S$10,000 in interest and later threatened the family for S$7,000.
“The loan sharks threatened to harm my family if we reported them to the police,” Hoo said. “We cannot live in peace, and I am now staying alone while my wife and other family members temporarily relocate.”
Hoo lodged two police reports in Malaysia, while his son filed one in Singapore. Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
