Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) sole representative in the Sabah State Legislative Assembly, Aliakbar Gulasan, will not support the current state administration and will instead sit with the opposition, PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin confirmed.
Muhyiddin said the decision was reached during a meeting held yesterday.
“He is a PAS member and will serve solely as an assemblyman, without joining the state government,” he said after attending a meeting of the Malay secretariat committee in Putrajaya, as reported by Utusan Malaysia.
Aliakbar recently made history by becoming PAS’s first elected representative in Sabah, winning the Karambunai seat in the Nov 29 state election. Contesting under the PN banner, he secured 7,054 votes in a fiercely contested 11-corner fight.
He edged out his nearest competitors — Warisan with 6,689 votes, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) with 4,818 votes, and Barisan Nasional (BN) with 4,475 votes.
Prior to this, Aliakbar, who also serves as Sabah PN vice-chairman, held a seat in the assembly through nomination following the 2020 state election.
In the latest polls, GRS won 29 seats and has since formed the state government in partnership with Pakatan Harapan, BN, Upko, and five independents.
Warisan, which captured 25 seats, now sits in the opposition alongside Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku leader Jeffrey Kitingan, who retained the Tambunan seat.
