Couple Leads Police on 13km Chase, Caught with Drugs After Injuring Officer

Date:

A couple was arrested after leading police on a 13-kilometre high-speed chase in Melaka yesterday evening, during which a police officer was injured and drugs were found in their possession.

Melaka Tengah police chief, Christopher Bathe, said the incident occurred around 6pm when patrol officers attempted to stop a Perodua Myvi carrying a 26-year-old man and his 28-year-old female companion near the Anika Flats in Melaka town.

Instead of complying, the couple sped off, driving recklessly and running multiple red lights, endangering other road users. The chase continued from Lorong Pandan toward the AMJ Highway, then through Taman Asia to Tanjung Minyak, before ending in Taman Bukit Naning when their car collided with a patrol motorcycle, injuring a police corporal.

They were surrounded and arrested by five patrol motorcycles and a police car. Police seized approximately 15.06 grams of suspected heroin from the suspects, who tested positive for drugs. They were taken to the Tengkera police station for further investigation.

The suspects are being investigated under Sections 186 and 332 of the Penal Code for obstructing and injuring a public servant, as well as Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking.

Viral videos on social media captured scenes of the chase and arrest. This morning, police brought the suspects to the Ayer Keroh Magistrate’s Court, where the court granted a 6-day remand under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
