21–30 Age Group Most Targeted In Telecom Scams, Police Say

Date:

Young adults aged between 21 and 30 recorded the highest number of victims of telecommunications fraud from January to November this year, with 8,789 individuals affected, police said.

The Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) said a total of 28,698 telecommunications crime cases were reported nationwide during the period, resulting in losses amounting to RM715 million.

In a statement shared on the CCID’s Facebook page, the department said those aged 31 to 40 made up the second-largest group of victims, with 6,825 cases, followed by individuals aged 41 to 50, involving 4,977 victims.

Police also reported 3,382 victims aged between 51 and 60, while 2,763 cases involved senior citizens aged over 60. Meanwhile, 1,962 victims were from the 15 to 20 age group.

The CCID said the figures show that telecommunications fraud affects all age groups, and urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid being easily deceived by scam tactics.

Members of the public who fall victim to such crimes are advised to contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997, verify information through the Semak Mule portal, and lodge a police report for further investigation.
