A man was fatally stabbed by his girlfriend’s son moments after sharing a Christmas kiss with her during dinner in Jaguariúna, São Paulo, Brazil. Leandro Flaeschen Moreira, 41, was pronounced dead shortly after the attack, which occurred yesterday. The alleged assailant, 18-year-old Caio César dos Santos Bartolomeu, was arrested at the scene. Reports suggest Bartolomeu disapproved of his mother, Sidneia Gonçalves dos Santos, 51, and Leandro’s relationship. At midnight, when Sidneia wished Leandro a “Merry Christmas,” he kissed her, prompting Bartolomeu to stab him with a knife he had hidden in his pocket.
Sidneia was also injured while trying to stop her son, and a neighbour alerted by Leandro’s screams found him dead on the ground. Leandro’s 16-year-old daughter witnessed the attack and has been taken into temporary foster care by Child Protective Services.
After the initial stabbing, Bartolomeu allegedly fled the scene and attacked three more people in the surrounding area. He was later detained by police after being cornered by locals and taken to hospital due to injuries and the effects of medication, before being questioned. Sidneia and the additional victims were treated at A&E, while Leandro’s body was sent for an autopsy.
The tragic incident comes shortly after a horrific Christmas Eve crash in the same state, where five members of another family, including two children, died when their vehicle was hit by a BMW on the SP-331 motorway in São Paulo. The BMW driver sustained minor injuries and an investigation is ongoing.
