Wait, What? Nintendo Claims Mario and Peach Are Only “Good Friends”?!

Date:

Fans of the iconic video game series woke up to surprising news this week when Nintendo’s official profile of Princess Peach described her relationship with Mario as merely “good friends,” sparking widespread debate online. The statement, originally posted on the Nintendo Today app and later removed due to routine updates, read: “Princess Peach and Mario are good friends and help each other out whenever they can.”

This seemingly innocent description has caused a stir among longtime fans, many of whom recall the numerous romantic moments between the two characters throughout the franchise’s history. From Valentine’s Day celebrations featuring pink hearts to Mario’s marriage proposal attempt at the end of Super Mario Odyssey, the relationship has often been portrayed as more than just friendship.

Nintendo’s inconsistency on the matter has not gone unnoticed. In past interviews, senior Nintendo developer Yoshiaki Koizumi openly said Mario “carries a torch” for Peach, reinforcing the idea of a romantic connection. Yet, the recent description seems to downplay that aspect, leading some to speculate that Nintendo may be distancing itself from the couple’s previous romantic framing.

The reaction among fans has been mixed. Some argue that it’s perfectly reasonable for Mario and Peach to be “good friends” who care deeply for each other, while others feel that referring to them solely as friends ignores the romantic undertones that have been a staple of their storylines.

This change has also reignited discussions about other well-known Nintendo couples, like Link and Zelda, who are often depicted as close companions with hints of romance. The evolving portrayal of these relationships leaves many wondering how Nintendo will define their iconic characters moving forward.

For now, Nintendo has not issued any official clarification, but the debate highlights how deeply fans care about the narratives behind their favorite characters—even those from a fictional video game world.
