The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is expected to publish a book detailing its decade-long investigation into the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, including relevant court judgments.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the publication would serve as a public reference to help readers better understand the case and address misconceptions that emerged throughout the trial, according to a report by Berita Harian.
“MACC wants this to be public reading material so that society can fully understand the case. Today, many people form opinions based on brief information from social media and reach conclusions without knowing the actual facts.
“For example, regarding the so-called Arab prince. Based on the testimony, we ourselves do not know who this individual really is or whether he is even a prince. All of this is clearly recorded in the court documents,” he was quoted as saying.
Azam said the anti-graft agency is awaiting the full written judgment before proceeding with the publication.
In December, the High Court in Putrajaya found former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak guilty on all 25 charges involving abuse of power and money laundering in connection with the 1MDB case.
Najib had faced four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering related to RM2.28 billion in 1MDB funds that were deposited into his AmBank accounts between February 2011 and December 2014.
Najib’s lawyer, Farhan Shafee, later confirmed that a notice of appeal had been filed against the conviction and sentence.
