Construction workers at the Golden Valley project site in Kampung Air Panas, Bemban, were left stunned after uncovering a 227-kilogramme aerial bomb during excavation works yesterday afternoon.
Jasin district police chief Superintendent Lee Robert said police received a report at about 3pm from a 52-year-old worker who spotted an object resembling a bomb while digging at the site.
Following the report, officers from the Melaka police Bomb Disposal Unit and the Jasin district police rushed to the location.
Initial checks confirmed the object was a World War II-era aerial bomb, measuring about 45 inches long and 27 to 36 centimetres in circumference. Further inspection found that the bomb was still active and in a corroded condition, making it highly dangerous.
Police said the bomb is scheduled to be destroyed this morning according to standard safety procedures to ensure the safety of the public and nearby areas.
The public has been advised not to speculate about the discovery, as it could cause unnecessary panic, and to fully cooperate with police during the disposal operation.
