Three Hospitalised After Ammonia Gas Leak at Highway Toll Exit

Date:

Three people were rushed to hospital after an ammonia gas leak from a lorry transporting gas cylinders caused breathing difficulties at a highway toll exit in Negeri Sembilan on Thursday afternoon.

In a statement, the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Negeri Sembilan said the incident occurred at about 2.40pm when a lorry carrying 15 ammonia gas cylinders developed a leak from one of the tanks while passing through a northbound toll exit.

The victims were identified as an Indian male highway security personnel, a Malay female toll booth worker, and a Chinese male lorry driver. All three suffered breathing difficulties and were sent to hospital for treatment.

The affected toll exit was temporarily closed as a safety precaution.

The Negeri Sembilan Fire and Rescue Department said firefighters arrived at the scene and covered the leaking cylinder with a wet cloth while waiting for contractors to transfer the gas cylinders to a safer location.

The situation was brought under control by 3.05pm, with authorities confirming the area was safe and posed no further risk to the public.

A total of 17 firefighters from the Seremban and Seremban 2 stations were deployed, along with a fire engine, an emergency medical rescue vehicle and a hazardous materials (HAZMAT) unit.
