Massive Sinkhole Swallows Lane in Bayan Lepas: Utility Leak Suspected!

Date:

A sinkhole that appeared on Jalan Kenyalang 1 in Bayan Lepas the day before yesterday is believed to have been caused by a utility pipe leak.

State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said contractors are conducting a detailed investigation to determine the source of the suspected leak. Identifying the cause is crucial before any repair work can proceed.

“We need to first determine the cause of the leak before we can take the next steps,” he told reporters at the Chief Minister’s office in Komtar today.

Previously, the Penang Public Works Department (JKR) announced that one side lane of Jalan Kenyalang 1 would be closed for six days following the discovery of the sinkhole. JKR said in a Facebook post that the lane would remain closed until January 25 as a safety measure for road users.

The sinkhole is estimated to measure around 2 metres long, 2 metres wide, and 1.7 metres deep. Traffic on the main lane has not been affected, with only the side lane closed.

Zairil added that once the source of the leak is identified, the utility company will be instructed to carry out the necessary repairs.
