The Dalai Lama has expressed gratitude after winning his first Grammy award, taking home the honor in the Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording category in Los Angeles. He received the award for Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
In a social media post, the 90-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader, who lives in exile in India, said, “I receive this recognition with gratitude and humility. I don’t see it as something personal, but as a recognition of our shared universal responsibility.” He emphasized that peace, compassion, and care for the environment are essential for humanity’s well-being.
Artists including Rufus Wainwright contributed to the audiobook, with Wainwright accepting the award on the Dalai Lama’s behalf.
The Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 after Chinese troops suppressed an uprising and has not returned. China regards Tibet as part of its territory and condemns the Dalai Lama as a separatist, insisting it must approve his successor—while the Dalai Lama maintains that only his India-based office has that right.
