A 14-year-old boy was killed after falling into a 10-metre-deep drainage hole along Jalan Bunga Tanjung here on Monday night.
The incident occurred at about 10.10pm after the motorcycle he was riding on with his 17-year-old brother was involved in an accident at the location.
Tampin district police chief Superintendent Amiruddien Sariman said the two brothers were travelling on a Yamaha Y100 motorcycle to a friend’s house in Kuala Ina at the time of the incident.
“Initial investigations found that the rider and pillion passenger were travelling from Tampin town towards Kuala Ina after having dinner,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
He added that upon reaching the scene, the motorcycle was believed to have lost control while negotiating a bend, causing it to crash into a drainage structure that was under construction on the left shoulder of the road.
The impact caused the pillion rider to be thrown into a 10-metre-deep drainage hole. The victim was later retrieved with the assistance of the Fire and Rescue Department.
The boy was rushed to Tampin Hospital but was pronounced dead at 11.30pm while receiving treatment. His brother sustained only minor injuries.
Amiruddien urged members of the public with information related to the accident to come forward and assist in the investigation by contacting the Traffic Police at the Tampin District Police Headquarters or the investigating officer, Inspector Sritharan, at 06-4412502.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and further investigations are ongoing.
