A domestic dispute is believed to have escalated into arson after police detained a man suspected of setting his brother-in-law’s home ablaze at PPR Desa Tun Razak in Cheras on Tuesday (Feb 3).
Cheras district police chief Mohd Rosdi Daud said the 34-year-old suspect was arrested at about 11.25am, only hours after authorities received a report on the fire.
According to police, the incident unfolded at around 8.30am when the suspect — who is married to the victim’s younger sister — arrived at the flat claiming he wanted to retrieve personal belongings. Upon the door being opened, the man allegedly raised his voice and accused the homeowner of interfering in his marriage.
In an attempt to defuse tensions, the victim allowed the suspect to enter the unit to collect his items while he himself moved away towards the staircase at the far end of the block. Situations involving family disputes can escalate rapidly, police noted, particularly when emotions are already strained.
Moments later, neighbours alerted authorities after spotting flames coming from the unit. Firefighters were dispatched and managed to extinguish the blaze. No injuries were reported, underscoring the swift response by emergency services and residents.
Further investigations revealed the suspect has five prior criminal records, and a urine screening returned positive for drug use. Police said an application for remand would be filed today to facilitate further enquiries.
The case is being probed under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine, as well as Section 506 for criminal intimidation. Police reminded the public that disagreements within families should be resolved through lawful channels, as acts of violence pose serious risks to lives and property.
