A businessman has been sentenced to two years in prison and fined RM300,000 by the sessions court for possessing a tiger’s hide at his residence four years ago.
Judge Zaki Salleh handed down the sentence to Ng Sing Huat after convicting him under Section 68(2)(c) of the Wildlife Conservation Act. The offence occurred at a condominium on Jalan Tun Razak on 1 August 2022.
The court ruled that Ng failed to raise reasonable doubt in his defence. He faces an additional year in prison if he does not pay the RM300,000 fine.
Judge Zaki also urged Ng to refrain from repeating the offence and to show compassion towards animals, describing them as “silent victims.”
The court allowed bail of RM30,000 with one surety after Ng’s lawyer, Hasshahari Johari Mawi, informed the court that an appeal would be filed. “The stay of execution on the jail sentence is allowed, but the accused must pay the fine and surrender his passport pending the appeal decision,” Zaki added.
Deputy public prosecutor Amanina Anuar represented the prosecution.
