A man was killed after becoming trapped in the driver’s cabin when the cement truck he was operating overturned at a construction site near Penang Hospital (HPP) along Jalan Residensi here on Friday.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations, John Sagun Francis, said the victim was an Indonesian national, although his identity and age have yet to be confirmed.
He said the incident occurred at about 11.29am when the cement truck is believed to have lost balance before toppling over, leaving the driver pinned inside the vehicle.
“The Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 11.29am and immediately dispatched a team from the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station to the scene.
“The first fire engine arrived at 11.35am, and the rescue operation was carried out with assistance from personnel from the Lebuh Pantai Fire and Rescue Station,” he said in a statement on Friday.
According to him, the operation was led by an officer and involved 13 personnel, including supervisors and the station chief.
“The operations commander conducted an initial assessment before instructing firefighters to don full personal protective equipment and use specialised rescue tools to extricate the trapped victim.
“A crane at the site was also utilised to assist in the operation. The victim was successfully removed at about 12.55pm but was pronounced dead at the scene by Ministry of Health personnel,” he said.
The body was later handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police for further investigation, and the operation was fully concluded at 1.16pm.
