Man Arrested During SPM Seminar for Alleged Inappropriate Sexual Behaviour

Date:

Authorities in Malaysia have arrested a man in his 20s at the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) on Saturday (7 Feb) following allegations of inappropriate behaviour during a seminar attended by secondary school students.

Police confirmed the suspect, who is not a university student, was taken into custody and remanded until 11 Feb as investigations continue to determine the motive behind the incident. Authorities have also noted that the man is believed to be of unsound mind.

The situation gained widespread attention after a series of viral posts on social media platform Threads on 8 Feb. According to the posts, students from three schools attended the seminar, with only one school requiring students to wear uniforms. The suspect reportedly entered the auditorium in casual clothing, claiming to be a student from one of the other schools, and was allowed to remain in the hall without verification.

During the seminar, a female student reportedly began crying, prompting a teacher to confront the man and ask him to leave. Footage circulating online shows the suspect standing up and adjusting his clothing as he exited the auditorium.

APU Chief Operating Officer Gurpardeep Singh later stated that investigations found no evidence that the man engaged in the alleged sexual behaviour, and the university is cooperating fully with authorities.

Police continue to investigate the incident as the case develops.
