AirAsia X is set to place a major order for smaller jets as it expands routes targeting first-time travellers in Asia, while dropping its pending order for 15 Airbus A330neo aircraft, the airline’s co-founder revealed on Tuesday.
Tony Fernandes, CEO of parent company Capital A, which recently completed a restructuring of its aviation operations, said the airline will decide between Airbus and Embraer regional jets within the next month, with the final order expected to be larger than previously reported. Industry insiders suggest AirAsia could order up to 150 Airbus A220 planes.
Fernandes shared the plans in an interview with Reuters following the announcement of a new low-cost hub in Bahrain, aimed at serving the Middle East market.
