Arrests Made Within 24 Hours After Shooting at MCBA Commander in Kedah

Date:

Authorities have swiftly apprehended suspects in connection with a shooting aimed at a Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) commander, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday.

Saifuddin detailed that the commander had left his home in Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah, in the early hours for Subuh prayers and was unharmed, while the shots struck only his vehicle. “The incident that occurred yesterday in Bukit Kayu Hitam is deeply regretted. Fortunately, the MCBA commander was safe when he left early in the morning for prayers. Arrests were made within 24 hours, and investigations are ongoing,” he said.

Highlighting the risks faced by border enforcement personnel, Saifuddin reiterated that the government prioritises their protection. Agencies stationed at Malaysia’s land entry points encounter persistent challenges, including cross-border crime, weapons smuggling, drug trafficking, human trafficking, illegal immigration, and organised criminal networks. Protective measures are being strengthened for all personnel deployed at these strategic locations.

The issue was raised in Parliament by Rantau Panjang MP Datuk Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff, who sought assurance on the government’s commitment to the safety of enforcement officers.

During the same parliamentary session, Saifuddin also addressed reforms to immigration passes, including the Professional Visit Pass, Temporary Employment Pass, and student visa pathways. A notable change allows foreign graduates of Malaysian institutions to stay in the country for 12 months after completing their studies, replacing the previous requirement to depart immediately. This extension provides graduates with opportunities to pursue internships, post-study training, or employment in sectors facing local talent shortages.

The swift action following the shooting underscores the government’s determination to safeguard frontline officers while ensuring that regulatory reforms support skilled workforce retention.
