A recent video showing a Grab driver watching videos on his phone while behind the wheel has gone viral on social media, raising serious concerns about passenger safety.
The footage was captured by a passenger, who later shared it online, questioning whether such behaviour was allowed. She noted this was not the first time she had seen a driver distracted by videos while driving, and said the driver’s actions caused slower travel despite light traffic, increasing her waiting time.
“Is this allowed?” she asked, pointing out that the driver continued watching even after noticing he was being recorded.
In response, Grab Malaysia issued a public apology on Threads, emphasising that safety remains the company’s top priority and that drivers are strictly prohibited from using phones to watch videos while driving. The company requested the passenger provide her booking ID via direct message so the matter could be investigated further, adding that appropriate action would be taken against the driver.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions online. Some users voiced strong concern for road safety, with one Facebook commenter noting, “This is why accidents happen — when the car in front brakes but the driver doesn’t.” Others argued that the passenger should have addressed the issue privately instead of posting it online, while some criticised the driver for putting passengers’ lives at risk.
The video has reignited debate about the importance of vigilance and adherence to safety rules among ride-hailing drivers, highlighting the ongoing need for strict monitoring and enforcement.
