Age Gap Sparks Discussion As Malaysian Postgrad Joins Class of 40s and 50s Students

Date:

A Malaysian postgraduate recently found himself in an unusual classroom dynamic when most of his classmates were middle-aged, highlighting the unique mix of generations in education. Sharing his experience on Threads, user @mmuhdnoahh wrote, “Classmates in their 40s and 50s… don’t even know what to chat about!” alongside a “speechless” reaction, sparking discussions across both Gen Z and older users.

Some took a humorous approach. Irfan joked he would simply act like their son, given many classmates were close to his father’s age. Hazique added he would begin conversations with, “Pada era globalisasi…,” mimicking formal essay writing in Malay.

Others pointed out the benefits of learning alongside older peers. Grace Prakash Rao advised the student to be a “helpful son,” saying, “Be polite and assist whenever you can. By semester’s end, you might gain your own ‘adopted mother and father’.” Yasmin added that befriending older classmates provides a “golden connection” to the real world, offering years of experience and insight. Another user noted that many of these students are already stable in life, with time and wisdom to share, making them a valuable resource for advice, including financial guidance.

@elyhasrul encouraged the postgraduate to embrace the opportunity, noting that older classmates may bring life experience he never knew he needed, while negative interactions could simply be ignored.

The postgraduate, pursuing a Master of Business Administration, has already sought career and multinational corporation tips from his older classmates. Meanwhile, Ailyna, a student in her 40s, expressed appreciation for the mix of ages in class, saying Gen Z students are supportive and motivating, even joking about how she might have hesitated to continue studying if she were their age.
