George Russell Wins Chinese GP Sprint, Extends F1 Championship Lead

Date:

George Russell secured victory in the sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix on Saturday, fending off a strong challenge from Ferrari drivers to deliver another win for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.

Starting from pole position at the Shanghai International Circuit, the British driver maintained control throughout the 19-lap race, finishing ahead of Ferrari teammates Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton after an intense battle in the early stages and a late safety car period.

Russell, who also won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix last weekend in a Mercedes one-two finish, earned eight points for the sprint victory and extended his lead in the Formula One drivers’ championship to 11 points.

“It was pretty fun in the end,” Russell said after the race. “There was a lot of strategy involved with the overtakes, and it’s not easy. I hope it was entertaining to watch because sprint races can sometimes be quite dull.”

Leclerc crossed the line 0.674 seconds behind Russell after a close duel with Hamilton during the race. The result marked the first time Ferrari had two drivers finish in the top three of a Formula One race session since the 2024 season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Hamilton, last year’s sprint race winner, started fourth on the grid while Leclerc lined up sixth. The Ferrari duo engaged in an intense contest with Russell, trading the lead four times within the first five laps.

“Lewis did an amazing job early on and caught me off guard,” Russell said. “With 20 years of experience, he’s still teaching us a thing or two.”

Despite the battle costing him valuable time, Leclerc said he was encouraged by Ferrari’s improved race pace compared with qualifying.

Further down the order, reigning world champion Lando Norris finished fourth for McLaren, while Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli took fifth place after serving a 10-second penalty following a collision with Isack Hadjar on the opening lap.

Oscar Piastri placed sixth for McLaren, ahead of Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls in seventh. Oliver Bearman secured the final point in eighth for Haas F1 Team.

The race was briefly neutralised when Nico Hulkenberg retired his Audi Formula One Team car on lap 14, prompting a safety car deployment. Several leading drivers used the opportunity to pit for fresh tyres.

When the race resumed on lap 17, Russell pulled clear as Leclerc struggled with wheelspin. Hamilton then chased down Norris and overtook the McLaren driver a lap later.

Norris admitted McLaren struggled to match the pace of Ferrari and Mercedes during the sprint race.

“I think yesterday we slightly overachieved because today we just didn’t have the pace to challenge Ferrari,” he said.

Meanwhile, four-time world champion Max Verstappen endured a frustrating race, finishing ninth for Red Bull Racing.

“Everything that could go wrong went wrong,” Verstappen said, citing balance issues and severe tyre degradation throughout the race.

Russell now leads the championship standings with 33 points, while Antonelli and Leclerc are tied on 22 points, followed by Hamilton with 18.

Qualifying for Sunday’s main race at the Chinese Grand Prix was scheduled to take place later on Saturday.
