A woman recently shared her experience of being taken advantage of by a neighbour who treated her home garden like a personal supermarket. Despite her generosity, the neighbour would frequently help herself to ingredients such as lemongrass, chili, kaffir lime leaves, pandan leaves, young mangoes, and even seedlings whenever she wanted to cook.
Choosing to maintain harmony, the woman kept quiet, valuing good neighbourly relations over confrontation. She explained on Threads, “My neighbour often asks for lemongrass, chili, kaffir lime leaves… sometimes even pandan leaves from my home. I just give them because it’s not like they’re finishing everything.”
The situation took a turn when she tried to buy young mangoes from the same neighbour to make sambal. She was surprised when he set a price of RM6 per kilo instead of offering them freely. “I laughed but decided to buy it anyway and gave him a bowl of the sambal I made,” she recounted.
Rather than holding a grudge, she chose a proactive solution by planting her own mango tree along the fence, joking that in two years it would be ready for harvest. She clarified that her post was meant to share a lighthearted perspective on human behaviour and not to fuel any resentment.
Netizens responded with a mix of amusement and empathy, many relating to similar experiences with neighbours taking liberties while maintaining good relations.
