Struggling to Find Love Online? Your Photos Might Be the Reason

Date:

If you’ve been finding online dating tricky, new research shows your choice of profile photo could be a bigger deal than you realise. A study by psychologists at The Open University of Catalonia in Spain analysed 1,000 Tinder profiles in Barcelona and uncovered nine common photo types, each sending a different message to potential matches.

Some users opt for “casual poser” shots, projecting spontaneity and friendliness, while others highlight their love of nature, hinting at an active, healthy lifestyle. There are also “nothing to hide” images – often revealing outfits or topless photos – which can unintentionally suggest a preference for casual hookups. Other categories include half portraits, selfies, full portraits, glasses-wearers, screensavers, and “a bit of myself” images, all reflecting varying degrees of self-expression and caution.

Dr Alejandro García Alamán, lead researcher, says many singles choose photos not for authenticity but based on what they think will attract others. “This strategy may protect us socially but can blur our individuality,” he explains. The study also found patterns linked to age and sexual orientation: younger users, especially women, were more likely to post revealing images, while straight men favoured action or nature shots, and gay men tended to smile more at the camera.

Although the study did not measure which images led to the most matches, researchers suggest that photos conveying humour, health, an active lifestyle, or social success can enhance appeal. Ultimately, Dr García Alamán advises, “Your profile should reflect who you are, with touches of authenticity that feel genuinely yours.”

This research highlights how the subtle messages in your dating app photos can shape impressions and influence connections – often more than the poses or backgrounds themselves.
