Western expatriates, military personnel, diplomats, and locals assisting them in Iraq are facing growing security threats as tensions linked to the Iran conflict intensify across the region.
A pro-Iran militia group operating in Iraq has reportedly offered a reward of 150 million Iraqi dinars — approximately £100,000 or about RM590,000 — for information leading to the capture and killing of foreign nationals. The chilling announcement has raised alarms among security experts, who warn the threat could extend beyond Americans to include all Westerners and potentially spread across the wider Middle East.
The group’s message, circulated ონლაინ, stated its intention to “tighten the noose” on individuals linked to the United States, offering financial incentives for intelligence that could lead to their capture or what it described as “field neutralisation.” Analysts caution that such language points to a heightened risk of kidnappings and targeted killings.
Intelligence assessments indicate that while the messaging explicitly mentions Americans, past patterns suggest broader targeting of Western nationals is likely. The substantial bounty is also expected to encourage informants, increasing risks not only for foreign workers but also for local collaborators. Reports have already emerged of a dismissed oil company employee in southern Iraq allegedly sharing sensitive information about foreign personnel with militia groups.
The development has sparked fears of a return to Iraq’s insurgency-era violence, when abductions and killings were widespread. This time, however, the threat is linked to the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a Shia militia group, rather than extremist Sunni factions such as those that previously gave rise to Al-Qaeda in Iraq and later the Islamic State.
The situation comes amid escalating conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that Tehran is prepared for a prolonged conflict, while Israeli forces continue strikes on Iranian cities including Tehran, Hamadan, and Isfahan. In response, Iran has launched counterattacks on Israeli territory, with damage reported in multiple areas.
Israel has signalled no immediate plans for de-escalation, with military officials indicating that thousands of targets within Iran remain under consideration. Meanwhile, Iran has threatened to disrupt shipping in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key route for around 20% of global oil and gas exports.
The broader conflict has also impacted neighbouring regions, including Lebanon, with rising casualties reported. Current figures indicate at least 1,444 নিহত in Iran, 15 in Israel, 13 US soldiers, and 19 deaths across Gulf states.
Amid the escalating tensions, Iran has also confirmed ongoing cooperation with countries such as Russia and China across political, economic, and military fronts. Analysts warn that the evolving situation could further destabilise the region, with foreign nationals increasingly at risk as geopolitical tensions continue to rise.
