The Penang Police have confirmed receiving a formal report regarding a heated confrontation between two groups in Kampung Melayu, Air Itam, Penang following a viral video depicting the altercation on Tuesday.
The dispute, which almost escalated into a physical brawl, was reportedly triggered by the use of firecrackers and fireworks in a residential area.
Penang Police Chief, Datuk Azizee Ismail, stated that the authorities will apply for an Order to Investigate (OTI) from the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) to facilitate further probes into the matter. He confirmed that a curriculum investigation paper will be opened under Section 504 of the Penal Code, which pertains to intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.
The incident gained widespread attention after a video lasting one minute and 47 seconds circulated on social media, showing the two groups engaged in a loud verbal shouting match and exchanging profanities. It is understood that one group had been setting off fireworks near residential homes late at night, prompting a local family to confront them.
The confrontation intensified as both parties refused to back down, leading to a tense stand-off that required police intervention to prevent physical violence. Datuk Azizee reiterated that the police take such public disturbances seriously and will proceed with the necessary legal steps once the OTI is granted.
