Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan has stated that the party remains open to readmitting former members, including high-profile figures such as former president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Speaking at an iftar event in Kuching involving the Public Works Department and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), Ahmad emphasised that the party is currently embracing a “forgive and forget” approach towards those who wish to return to the fold.
The party leadership is prepared to deliberate on all applications, whether they involve individuals who were previously sacked, those who resigned voluntarily, or new applicants joining the cause for the first time. Ahmad noted that even an application from Dr Mahathir would be formally discussed by the Supreme Council to reach a collective decision. This follows a long history for the veteran statesman, who first joined Umno in the 1940s and served as its president for over 22 years before several high-profile departures and the subsequent leadership of other political entities like Bersatu and Pejuang.
This move aligns with recent remarks made by Umno President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who declared that the party’s doors are “unconditionally” open to former members during the holy month of Ramadan. Zahid expressed a willingness to overlook past differences and mistakes to strengthen the party’s ranks. To facilitate this process, Umno has established the “Rumah Bangsa” task force, chaired by Vice-President Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, to coordinate and streamline the re-entry of former members.
The announcement comes amidst a wave of interest from several prominent former leaders. Former Umno Youth Chief Khairy Jamaluddin has reportedly submitted an application to rejoin, while former Vice-President Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has formally requested the party to lift his current suspension. These developments suggest a significant effort by Umno to consolidate its influence by bringing back experienced political figures.
Ahmad Maslan reiterated that while the doors are open, every application will still undergo a structured review process. The goal is to ensure that the return of these members contributes positively to Umno’s long-term objectives and Malay interests. As the 16th General Election approaches, the party appears focused on unity and reconciliation to bolster its standing within the national political landscape.
