Heavy Vehicle Travel Ban Enforced For Aidilfitri On 19-20 And 28-29 March

Date:

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has announced that a driving ban on goods and logistics vehicles will be enforced this year in conjunction with the Aidilfitri festive season. The prohibition is scheduled to take effect on 19 and 20 March, followed by a second phase on 28 and 29 March. This strategic move aims to facilitate smoother traffic flow and reduce the risk of road accidents, ensuring a more comfortable and safer “balik kampung” journey for holidaymakers in line with Malaysia MADANI aspirations.

In a statement released via Facebook today, the MOT explained that the implementation of this ban considers a delicate balance between easing road congestion and maintaining critical operational needs. The ministry noted that by restricting heavy machinery during peak travel periods, the overall safety of light vehicle users is significantly enhanced. Members of the public are encouraged to plan their journeys meticulously and adhere to all traffic regulations to ensure collective safety throughout the celebrations.

Despite the general prohibition, the ministry clarified that certain categories of heavy vehicles will be permitted to operate within specific time frames. Container and cargo lorries, for instance, are allowed on the roads from 8 am to 8 pm during the affected dates. Construction vehicles are also granted a window of operation from 6 am to 6 pm, provided their movements remain within a 25-kilometre radius of their designated sites.

Further exemptions have been granted to several critical services to ensure that essential national operations remain undisrupted. These include emergency response vehicles, transport services linked to ports and airports, and lorries carrying basic necessities. The MOT emphasised that this nuanced approach reflects the government’s commitment to road safety while simultaneously safeguarding the supply chain and vital logistics infrastructure.

The ministry’s proactive measures are part of a broader effort to manage the high volume of traffic expected on major expressways across the country. By coordinating these restrictions, the authorities hope to mitigate the typical bottlenecks associated with festive seasons. Travellers are advised to stay updated on the latest traffic announcements and to exercise patience as they travel to their respective hometowns.
