European Leaders Reject US-Israeli Military Operations In Iran Citing Lack Of Clear Strategy

Date:

European heads of state have collectively declined direct involvement in US-led military operations against Iran, highlighting a significant rift in Transatlantic relations. Despite his reputation as a committed Transatlanticist, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered a notably blunt address to lawmakers on Wednesday, expressing deep scepticism regarding the rationale behind the ongoing conflict. Merz emphasised that Washington had failed to consult its European allies or provide a convincing strategic plan for the operation’s success, leading Berlin to formally decline military participation in securing the Strait of Hormuz.

The decision to remain on the sidelines reflects a calculated move by European leaders who are wary of being drawn into an unpredictable and domestically unpopular war. French President Emmanuel Macron and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius have both mirrored this sentiment, with the latter explicitly stating that the conflict was not initiated by Europe. These leaders are prioritising regional stability and public opinion over the risks of further straining ties with the United States, which are already under pressure due to disagreements over Ukraine and international trade tariffs.

US President Donald Trump has criticised the refusal of NATO allies to join the maritime effort, labelling the decision a “very foolish mistake.” The American administration has directed particular scorn toward British Prime Minister Keir Starmer; however, domestic polling suggests that Starmer’s cautious approach is supported by nearly half of the British public. Even opposition figures in the United Kingdom, who are typically critical of the Prime Minister, have expressed disapproval of the aggressive rhetoric emanating from the White House, described by some as a “war of words.”

Resistance to the military campaign is also evident in Spain, where Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez denounced the attacks as reckless and illegal. The Spanish government has remained firm despite threats of trade repercussions, asserting that the nation will not act as a vassal to foreign interests. This stance is bolstered by significant domestic opposition to the war, with 68% of Spaniards surveyed expressing their disapproval. In Germany, even the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has voiced criticism, suggesting that the current US administration has shifted from a platform of peace to one of active conflict.

Amidst this volatility, European powers are attempting to manage the situation on their own terms. While refusing a secondary role in the US-led mission, France and Britain are reportedly consulting with Asian and Gulf Arab states to develop an independent plan for securing the Strait of Hormuz once the security environment stabilises. EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas indicated that the bloc is maintaining a focused and calm demeanor, preparing for continued unpredictability in global leadership while seeking paths toward de-escalation with Tehran.
