The iconic toothy grin of Labubu is set to transition from collectible shelves to the silver screen, following a landmark announcement by Chinese toy titan Pop Mart and Sony Pictures Entertainment. In a statement released on Thursday (19 March), the companies revealed plans to develop a feature-length film centred on the “ugly-cute” monster. This move represents a strategic leap for Pop Mart as it seeks to transform its most popular characters into a multifaceted international entertainment franchise, moving beyond the realm of designer toys.
The ambition to elevate Labubu into a global cultural icon has been increasingly evident, particularly with Pop Mart’s recent decision to establish London as its European headquarters. To ensure the project’s success, the film has secured top-tier talent, with Paul King attached to produce and direct. King, the BAFTA-nominated filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed Paddington series and Wonka, will also co-write the screenplay alongside Steven Levenson, the award-winning writer known for Dear Evan Hansen.
Currently in the early stages of development, the film is envisioned as a hybrid of live-action and CGI. Pop Mart executives have openly stated that they are adopting a strategy similar to the Disney business model, aiming to leverage Labubu’s viral popularity into long-term success across content, theme parks, and diverse merchandise. Industry analysts view the partnership with Sony Pictures as a significant milestone in Pop Mart’s efforts to diversify its revenue streams and establish a lasting presence in the global entertainment industry.
Despite the high-profile nature of the announcement, financial experts suggest that while the film will likely bolster future licensing income, it may not immediately impact the company’s stock valuation. Nevertheless, Labubu’s immense popularity has already significantly benefited the Hong Kong-listed firm, with shares surging 64% over the past year. This growth has propelled Pop Mart’s market value to exceed the combined worth of established industry giants such as Hasbro, Mattel, and Sanrio.
The character of Labubu and “The Monsters” were originally created in 2015 by Kasing Lung, a Hong Kong-born artist and writer raised in the Netherlands. Lung, who first introduced the characters in his The Monsters Trilogy picture books, will serve as an executive producer on the upcoming film. The announcement coincides with the character’s 10th anniversary, which Pop Mart is currently celebrating through a global tour that has recently made its latest stop in Paris.
