Netflix is set to transport fans back to the supernatural realm of Hawkins with limited theatrical screenings of its highly anticipated animated series, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. According to a statement released on March 17, the streaming giant will partner with select AMC theatres to host special screenings of the first two episodes starting April 18. This exclusive theatrical run will precede the show’s global digital debut on April 23, offering enthusiasts a cinematic first look at the latest expansion of the franchise.
The screenings are scheduled to take place across 34 theatres throughout the United States, including high-profile venues such as the Paris Theater in New York and the newly established Netflix House in Philadelphia. This animated venture marks a significant collaboration, reuniting original creators Matt and Ross Duffer as executive producers. They are joined by showrunner Eric Robles, the creative mind behind the popular Nickelodeon animated series Fanboy & Chum Chum, ensuring a professional blend of the franchise’s signature tone with established animation expertise.
Set during the winter of 1985, the narrative of Tales From ’85 finds the core group—Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max—attempting to embrace a semblance of normalcy. Their days are initially filled with typical mid-80s activities, including snowball fights and intense sessions of Dungeons & Dragons. However, this period of tranquillity is abruptly interrupted when a terrifying new threat awakens, forcing the companions to unite once more to unravel a mystery that threatens the safety of their hometown.
This project is the newest addition to the rapidly growing Stranger Things universe, which has seen continuous expansion since the Duffer brothers launched their production company, Upside Down Pictures, in 2022. Operating under an overall deal with Netflix, the company’s roadmap also includes a future live-action spin-off series. The franchise’s reach has already extended far beyond its streaming origins, encompassing a Tony Award-winning Broadway production, various video games, immersive live experiences, and a diverse array of global merchandise.
The introduction of an animated format allows for a fresh visual exploration of the Upside Down while maintaining the nostalgic 1980s aesthetic that defined the original live-action series (2016 to 2025). As anticipation builds for the April release, industry analysts suggest that this strategy of limited theatrical events helps solidify the brand’s presence as a premier entertainment property. Fans in Malaysia and around the world can expect the full series to be available for streaming shortly after the exclusive US theatrical previews.
