Batik Air has further strengthened its domestic network with the official launch of direct flight services between Penang and Johor Bahru starting today. This new daily service offers a faster and more convenient travel option for passengers commuting between the two major economic and tourism hubs in the northern and southern regions of Peninsular Malaysia. The introduction of this route follows a recorded surge in demand during the recent Chinese New Year festive season.
The airline confirmed in a statement that the decision to establish this permanent route was driven by the high volume of passengers seeking direct travel without the need for a layover in Kuala Lumpur. During the recent festive period, additional flights were introduced to accommodate the influx of travellers returning to their hometowns, and the overwhelming response highlighted a significant need for better point-to-point domestic links. This move aims to stimulate both tourism and business activities while reducing reliance on lengthy road travel.
Penang International Airport remains a critical gateway, recording 741,183 passenger movements in January 2026 alone, maintaining its status as one of Malaysia’s busiest aviation hubs after Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Simultaneously, Senai International Airport in Johor Bahru continues to demonstrate positive growth as a vital southern hub. By connecting these two strategic locations, Batik Air intends to facilitate smoother transitions for holidaymakers and corporate travellers alike.
Chief Executive Officer of Batik Air, Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy, stated that the launch of the Penang–Johor Bahru route reflects the company’s commitment to reinforcing its domestic reach in alignment with evolving travel patterns. He noted that both cities play indispensable roles in the nation’s trade and tourism sectors. He added that the new service would effectively bridge the gap between the two regions, fostering closer ties and supporting the broader national economic agenda.
In support of the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, the airline emphasised that strengthening domestic interconnectivity is a primary driver for the growth of the country’s economy. Datuk Chandran further remarked that Batik Air would continue to explore opportunities to expand routes that improve access between Malaysia’s key territories. This expansion marks another step toward a more comprehensive domestic network, and members of the public can now book flights via the official Batik Air website or mobile application.
