The Osaka Prefectural Police have initiated a formal murder investigation after the remains of a male victim were discovered in a residential unit in Higashiyodogawa Ward on 18 March. The body was found lying face up in a seventh-floor studio apartment by a building manager who had gone to check on the occupant’s welfare. Early forensic assessments indicate that the deceased had been dead for several weeks, with the time of death estimated to be sometime in late February.
According to reports from the Asahi Shimbun, an autopsy revealed multiple stab wounds concentrated on the victim’s upper body. Investigators specifically identified two deep wounds that pierced the heart as the primary cause of death. Additionally, several defensive wounds were found on the victim’s hands and arms, suggesting a violent struggle had taken place prior to his demise. The nature of these injuries has led authorities to treat the case as a clear homicide rather than an accident or self-inflicted incident.
The crime scene presented several unusual circumstances that have complicated the initial stages of the inquiry. While the main entrance to the apartment was found securely locked, police noted that a window leading to the balcony had been left open. No identification documents, mobile phones, or wallets were found inside the premises, leaving the victim’s identity officially unconfirmed. This lack of personal belongings suggests that the perpetrator may have removed items to delay the identification process.
The registered tenant of the apartment is a man in his 80s, who has been reported missing since the body was discovered. Law enforcement officers are currently working to determine if the deceased is indeed the elderly tenant or another individual altogether. Search operations and door-to-door inquiries are being conducted within the neighbourhood to trace the final movements of the missing tenant and to identify any suspicious activity that may have occurred in late February.
As the investigation enters its second day, forensic teams continue to sweep the seventh-floor unit for DNA evidence and fingerprints that could lead to a suspect.
