A 21-year-old Malaysian man has been taken into police custody following the viral circulation of a video showing him lighting fireworks in a hazardous manner on a public road. Acting Seri Alam District Police Chief, Superintendent Victor Genason, confirmed that the authorities took action after spotting the 53-second footage which was uploaded to the Facebook platform on Saturday. The clip depicted a reckless display that posed a significant safety risk to other road users and pedestrians in the vicinity.
Investigations into the digital evidence revealed that the incident occurred within the Seri Alam area at approximately 11:00 pm on 18 March. Following the identification of the individual in the video, a police team successfully tracked down the suspect to Kampung Pasir Putih. The arrest was carried out at around 11:00 pm on Saturday night, exactly one week after the reported offence took place, marking a swift response by the local enforcement unit.
A background check conducted by the police following the arrest showed that the young man had no prior criminal history. Despite his clean record, the nature of the act necessitated formal legal intervention to deter similar reckless behaviour during the festive season. The suspect is currently being held to assist with further inquiries into the motivation behind the stunt and whether others were involved in organising the dangerous roadside activity.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 286 of the Penal Code, which addresses negligent conduct with respect to any explosive substance. If found guilty, individuals can face penalties designed to underscore the gravity of mishandling dangerous materials in public spaces. Superintendent Victor emphasised that the police take such matters seriously, as unauthorised firework displays on transit routes can lead to severe accidents or property damage.
In light of the arrest, the police have issued a formal advisory urging the public to refrain from speculating or spreading unverified information regarding the incident. The authorities stressed that the cooperation of the community is vital in ensuring that the investigation remains thorough and fair. Members of the public are encouraged to report any similar dangerous activities to the nearest police station to maintain the safety and harmony of residential neighbourhoods.
