“Be More Like Taylor Swift”: Chappell Roan Faces Global Backlash Following Brazil Controversy

Date:

American pop sensation Chappell Roan is currently embroiled in a significant public relations crisis following a string of controversies that have led many fans to compare her unfavourably to industry veteran Taylor Swift. The latest incident involves a high-profile altercation in Brazil, where the security team of the Pink Pony Club hitmaker reportedly left the 11-year-old stepdaughter of footballer Jorginho in tears.

The child, Ada, who is the daughter of actor Jude Law and Catherine Harding, was allegedly berated for “harassing” the singer while merely smiling at her during breakfast at a shared hotel.

The backlash has intensified as fans point to Taylor Swift, 35, as the “gold standard” for celebrity conduct. Swift, a billionaire superstar, has built a decades-long career on her “nice girl” reputation, frequently hosting “Secret Sessions” for fans at her private residences and personally intervening when her security team appears too aggressive. In contrast, 28-year-old Roan has become increasingly known for viral outbursts, including confronting fans in Paris and publicly stating she “does not give a f***” if setting harsh boundaries makes her appear selfish.

The situation escalated when Jorginho took to social media to condemn the treatment of his stepdaughter, prompting a video response from Roan. In her statement, the singer insisted that the security personnel involved were not her personal staff and that she was unaware of the interaction. However, this explanation failed to appease Catherine Harding, who argued that celebrities bear a fundamental responsibility for the conduct of those acting on their behalf. The incident has led to calls from some sections of the public for Roan to “quit the industry” if she cannot manage the pressures of mainstream fame.

Political figures have also weighed in on the controversy, with Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere reportedly banning Roan from performing at an upcoming city concert in May. The singer’s recent professional conduct has further soured her relationship with the European audience after she cancelled several shows in Paris and Amsterdam with minimal notice, citing “scheduling conflicts.” These cancellations left numerous fans thousands of pounds out of pocket, adding to the growing narrative of “unprofessionalism” surrounding the rising star.

While some peers, including Miley Cyrus, have defended Roan’s right to privacy and mental well-being in the age of social media, industry veterans like Boy George have urged her to “cheer up” and embrace the reality of her success. As Roan continues to navigate her rapid ascent to global stardom, the divide between her “artist, not celebrity” stance and the expectations of her audience remains a focal point of debate. Whether the singer can successfully pivot her image and avoid “cancelling” herself remains to be seen.
