OpenAI Abruptly Cancels Sora Video Tool Dissolving Billion Dollar Disney Partnership

Date:

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the technology and entertainment industries, OpenAI has announced the immediate cancellation of its high-profile AI video generation tool, Sora. The decision resulted in the sudden termination of a landmark $1 billion agreement with The Walt Disney Company, which had been announced only three months prior. According to sources familiar with the matter, Disney teams were actively collaborating with OpenAI on Sora-linked projects as late as Monday evening, only to be blindsided by the news of the tool’s dissolution less than an hour after their meeting.

The collapse of the deal ends an ambitious three-year partnership where Disney intended to invest $1 billion into OpenAI while providing access to over 200 iconic characters for AI-generated content. Insiders revealed that although the partnership was publicised, the transaction had not yet closed and no funds had officially changed hands before the cancellation. OpenAI executives had reportedly been debating the future of the application for some time, citing the massive computational resources required to maintain the video tool as a primary factor that drained “firepower” from other critical research departments.

OpenAI is now pivoting its strategic focus toward more lucrative sectors, specifically enterprise coding tools and the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). This shift is part of a broader effort to streamline the company’s operations ahead of a potential stock market debut later this year. As part of this internal restructuring, leadership roles have been redefined, with Fidji Simo transitioning to the position of CEO of AGI Deployment. Additionally, CEO Sam Altman confirmed that the company’s security and safety teams will no longer report directly to him.

The termination of Sora comes at a time of intensifying competition in the AI market, where rivals such as Anthropic have gained significant ground. Anthropic’s “Claude Code” product has seen strong adoption among developers, placing pressure on OpenAI to prioritise its corporate and programming products over creative consumer applications. Despite the stunning initial launch of Sora in early 2024, which prompted a global race in AI video generation, the standalone app—which launched in September 2025—will now be phased out as the company integrates its capabilities into a singular “super-app” focused on AGI.

A spokesperson for Disney stated that the media giant respects OpenAI’s decision to exit the video generation business and shift its priorities. While the blockbuster deal has been scrapped, both parties are reportedly engaged in discussions to explore alternative avenues for investment or partnership. Meanwhile, the Sora team expressed their regrets in a post on social media, noting that further details regarding the preservation of user work and the future of the app’s API would be shared with the public at a later date.
