A 12-year-old boy has appeared before the Birmingham Youth Court facing several grave charges, including the sexual assault and wounding of a woman in her 60s. During the court proceedings on Tuesday, it was revealed that the victim was discovered at a property north of Birmingham city centre at approximately 6:15 pm on 18 March. The woman was found in a critically injured state, suffering from heavy bleeding and multiple wounds, and was reportedly barely conscious at the time of discovery.
Prosecutor Colin Charvill informed the court that the victim was found lying on the floor with significant injuries to her chest and face. Due to the severity of her condition, she remains hospitalised in a serious state and has been placed in a medically induced coma to facilitate her recovery. In addition to the charges of sexual assault and wounding, the youth is also accused of a theft offence occurring on the same day, as well as an intentional strangulation charge stemming from a separate incident on 11 February.
The defendant, whose identity is protected by legal restrictions due to his age, entered indications of not guilty pleas to all charges brought against him. His mother and sister were present during the hearing to observe the proceedings. District Judge David Murray ordered that the boy be remanded to youth detention accommodation, with a subsequent appearance scheduled at Birmingham Crown Court for 21 April.
West Midlands Police have issued a public statement acknowledging the significant concern this incident has caused within the local community. Authorities have increased patrols to provide reassurance to residents while investigations continue. The police are currently reviewing forensic evidence and gathering witness statements to build a comprehensive timeline of the events leading up to the discovery of the victim last Wednesday.
The Major Incident Public Portal remains open for any members of the public who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour in the area between 11 February and 18 March. Investigating officers have urged anyone with relevant information or CCTV footage to contact the authorities by quoting log 4888 of 18 March. As the legal process moves to the Crown Court, officials emphasized that the integrity of the ongoing investigation remains a top priority for the department.
