A 22-year-old delivery rider has been sentenced to four months in prison by the Melaka Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to two charges of voluntarily causing hurt to his pregnant wife. Muhammad Aidil Azahar Rahmat admitted to the offences before Magistrate Nur Afiqah Radhiah Zainurin on Thursday (26 March). The court ordered the sentences for both charges to run concurrently from the date of his arrest on 19 March, resulting in a total jail term of four months.
The prosecution, led by Inspector Nur Zaidah Muhamad Zailani, argued for a deterrent sentence, highlighting the accused’s responsibility as a husband to protect his spouse. The court was informed that the victim, 20-year-old Nur Azhiimah Abd Razak, was pregnant with the accused’s child at the time of the assault. The prosecution emphasised that the physical injuries sustained by the victim were a serious matter that warranted a just penalty.
According to the first charge, the accused intentionally caused injury by punching the back of the victim’s head. The second charge detailed further physical abuse, including slapping her face, hitting her head, and pushing her until she fell. The incidents took place both inside and on the pavement of a karaoke premises at the Kota Syahbandar Business Complex on 15 March, occurring between 3.59 am and 4.06 am.
The violent encounter was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) at the premises, which showed the accused hitting, slapping, and pulling the victim’s hair. The footage further revealed the accused using a motorcycle to strike the head of the victim while she was lying on the ground. A police report was subsequently lodged by the victim’s mother after she witnessed the harrowing recorded footage of the assault.
Medical reports from Melaka Hospital confirmed that the victim suffered soft tissue injuries to her head and right cheek as a result of the attack. The accused, who was not represented by legal counsel, appealed for a minimum sentence, claiming he felt deep remorse for his actions. He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A, which provides for a maximum of two years’ imprisonment for domestic violence offences.
