Beijing has called on all parties involved in the escalating Middle East conflict to establish the necessary conditions for “meaningful and sincere” peace talks. During a regular press briefing on Thursday (26 March), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasised that the immediate priority must be the active promotion of a ceasefire and the cessation of hostilities. This diplomatic appeal comes as the region faces heightened volatility following a month of military actions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The spokesperson’s remarks follow a period of cautious optimism expressed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who recently noted a “glimmer of hope” for peace. This sentiment was based on emerging signals regarding potential negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Despite these observations, the diplomatic situation remains complex, with Iran publicly denying that any formal talks have commenced. Earlier this week, Iranian officials dismissed claims of direct engagement after U.S. President Donald Trump postponed a threatened strike on Iran’s power grid, citing progress in discussions with unidentified representatives.
While China has not officially confirmed whether it has direct knowledge of backchannel negotiations, Foreign Minister Wang Yi has been actively engaging with regional counterparts. In a recent telephone conversation with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Wang highlighted that the rapidly changing situation offers a unique window for diplomacy. He reiterated China’s long-standing position that dialogue is the only viable path to resolving the crisis, stressing that even the commencement of talks provides a foundation for regional stability.
The diplomatic push by Beijing also included a direct appeal to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. During their discussion on Tuesday, Wang urged Tehran to seize every available opportunity to initiate the peace process as quickly as possible. China maintains that a prolonged war serves no party’s interests and warned that continued fighting would only lead to further casualties, significant economic losses, and a dangerous spillover of the conflict into neighbouring territories.
As the conflict nears its second month, the international community remains focused on the potential for a diplomatic breakthrough. China has pledged to continue its role as a mediator and has called on the United States and Iran to move beyond rhetoric towards concrete engagement. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that it remains ready to work with all stakeholders to de-escalate tensions and ensure the safety of critical regional infrastructure and global shipping routes.
