Fatal Stabbing At Tokyo Pokemon Center Leaves Employee And Suspect Dead

Date:

A female employee at a popular Pokemon merchandise store was stabbed to death in a crowded Tokyo commercial complex on Thursday, with the suspected assailant also dying from self-inflicted wounds. The violent incident occurred during the busy children’s spring break season, sending shockwaves through one of Japan’s most prominent shopping districts. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that the woman, aged in her 20s, was attacked at approximately 7:16 p.m. within the shopping mall by a man of a similar age.

According to broadcaster TV Asahi, the victim was a store clerk at the Pokemon Center Mega Tokyo, situated on the second floor of the Sunshine City building in Ikebukuro. Reports indicate the perpetrator was wielding knives in both hands during the assault. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, both individuals were pronounced dead within an hour of the incident. Investigations are ongoing, but preliminary reports from The Asahi Shimbun newspaper suggest that police had previously received stalking complaints from a person believed to be the deceased employee.

Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of absolute chaos at the Pokemon shop, which was occupied by dozens of customers, including many children, at the time of the attack. One witness informed the media that he fled the premises after hearing a woman’s screams for help followed by the sound of shelves crashing to the floor. Upon looking back, he observed a staff member with bloodstains on his clothing and a man dressed in black forcing his way behind a sales counter.

Social media footage captured the moment panicked shoppers fled the site as emergency services converged on the building, located just a few hundred metres from the Ikebukuro terminal, one of Tokyo’s busiest transport hubs. NHK public television reported that nearby store employees quickly pulled down security shutters to protect customers as the situation unfolded. The sudden violence has left the local community in mourning, particularly given the family-friendly nature of the location.

In response to the tragedy, The Pokemon Co, which operates approximately two dozen outlets across Japan, announced that the Ikebukuro store and the adjacent “Pikachu Sweets” cafe would remain closed until further notice. The company issued a statement on its website affirming that it would prioritise full cooperation with the police investigation while focusing on the physical and mental well-being of its staff. While Japan maintains strict gun control laws, the country has seen a series of high-profile knife attacks in public spaces and transit hubs in recent years.
