The government has called on enforcement agencies, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to take firm action against the spread of fake news involving fuel and electricity prices, which has been described as increasingly widespread.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said MCMC has detected 96 pieces of false content related to the issue circulating on social media so far.
In a video message on Wednesday, he said the spread of misinformation comes at a time when the country is facing extraordinary challenges due to the global energy crisis, and it risks destabilising public confidence while misleading citizens.
“We are working in extraordinary conditions with rising challenges, but this does not stop those who continue to lie, hate, sabotage and betray… there have been many false reports about increases in fuel prices and cost of goods based on inaccurate policies,” he said.
The Prime Minister stressed that firm action is necessary as the dissemination of fake information is irresponsible and harmful to the public.
“There is no choice but to urge the authorities, whether PDRM or the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to take action as MCMC has identified 96 fake contents regarding fuel and electricity prices on social media,” he added.
He said spreading false information during a period of economic pressure amounts to a betrayal of the nation and society, adding that such actions are often driven by narrow political interests without regard for public impact.
Anwar also urged the public to be more cautious in receiving and sharing information, particularly on social media platforms.
“People must filter news carefully, verify facts, and work together to monitor the situation to protect families, communities and the country,” he said.
The Prime Minister also prayed that the government’s efforts in addressing current challenges would be blessed, and that Malaysia continues to be protected under God’s grace.
